Slow down:
Law enforcement presence in work zones may protect both workers and drivers
InfraStripe is built on the belief that the safety of people is worth investing in. For both those who complete our projects and those who benefit from them, our aim is to have as few casualties as humanly possible.
Research has been done to explore what else can be done to keep people safe on the road. A recent study conducted by the Florida Department of Transportation decided to place state troopers onsite during ongoing construction work. The purpose of the study was to determine if the presence of the state trooper vehicles had any affect on passing vehicles.
The findings of the study showed that having police officers vehicles on site significantly impacted the speed of passing cars. The sight of officer vehicles with blue lights flashing reduced overall traffic speed by 16-20%. (Source: Equipment World) Most of the approaching vehicles either slowed their speed, changed into a different lane, or both.
Based on studies like this, it is our belief that placing officers at highway construction sites will decrease the intensity of traffic and take greater precautions to keep employees safe. Our hope is that the sight of law enforcement will encourage drivers to use greater caution, reduce their speed, and give more room to those working on the road.
In the past two decades, over 1,800 lost their lives while working on traffic construction sites. (Source: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) InfraStripe intends to be a part of making that number smaller. Forging a partnership between the police and construction companies will increase revenue for local state troopers and prevent construction worker fatalities on a national scale.
Infrastripe prides itself on going the extra mile to ensure our employees are protected themselves as they keep the roadway safe. And in partnering with local law enforcement, we are confident we can protect more construction worker lives nationwide.
